The Bible is our primary resource as we help children to grow in faith. How do we help them to explore it in ways that are ‘child-centred’, and that encourage them to grow up with the Bible and not grow out of it? Come and learn more about the multiple ways children learn and how we can use those pathways in our Bible engagement. Discover how active learning through drama, storytelling, quizzes, memory verses and insightful questions can encourage children to find themselves in God’s Big Story. The world is changing at an exponential pace. Technology is not going away. Denial is not a strategy that is going to work! While the challenge seems huge, come and explore some basic principles that undergird any strategy to help young people and parents to navigate through a digital world in a healthy way. Being informed is the start of the journey. It doesn’t matter whether you are starting out, very experienced leading Youth Ministry, or somewhere in between. In this workshop, we will explore a range of practical takeaway ideas that can be applied to whatever stage you are at. What steps can we take to help teenagers identify and develop their potential so that they grow in Christian service and leadership? How do we allow for the ups and downs of being a teenager as they learn to follow Jesus? This elective will help answer these questions while considering the critical roles of mentoring and coaching that you and everyone in your church can play. How can we comfortable and thoughtful in engaging in interfaith conversations among youth? In this elective, the CHAT Guidelines (Cultural - Hearing - Asking - Telling) will help you gain useful skills as well as the confidence to better navigate interfaith dialogue with young people. Jesus calls all believers to be active disciples. This means we need to build a culture that values the spiritual growth and participation of all ages within our churches. Come and learn some simple ways that you can help encourage the children in your context to connect, grow, and serve as disciples of Christ. Some of the tips we hope to add to your children’s ministry toolbox include: encouraging participation; using icebreakers; choosing the right questions to ask; and creating opportunities for children to serve. When it comes to spiritual conversations, Jesus was a true master. In this session, we will explore 7 tools that Jesus used to amazing effect in his conversations and apply them to the issues and concerns facing today's young people. If you can establish effective, reliable strategies to use for positive behaviour and expectations, you are well on the way to setting the scene for a calm, enjoyable session for all. Choose strategies you like, involve the children in some of the decision-making, then practise the skills until you are comfortable with them, can use them consistently and almost without thinking. So let's get started with the 3Ps .... Rather than spending time searching Google images, you could invest this time creating simple visuals to teach and engage children. Join this workshop to discover the simplicity of drawing and crafting your own Bible images (or where to look for them!). Explore how these simple drawings can be multiplied to create a whole host of engaging and copy-right free activities for Sunday School. While not mandatory, if you have access to an iPad and Apple Pencil, feel free to bring them along for an even more hands-on experience. Through interactive discussions and examples, let’s chat about how our internal bias can impact the way we care for and extend grace to others. Let’s grow and learn from each other about how we can best care for people from gender and sexually diverse groups. Volunteers are critical in any organisation but especially in the church. After all, being servant-hearted is at the heart of the gospel. So, how can we encourage a volunteer culture in our faith communities when people are already very busy? How can we nurture an attitude of joyful service? Jenny Savill and Adam Lowe come with many years of experience - interact with them in a panel setting chaired by Murray Wright. Join us as we explore the art of 'games with a purpose', emphasizing adaptability for age, group size, equipment, and space. Discover how to infuse games with biblical narratives, creating a meaningful connection between games and spiritual growth. Learn strategies for maintaining control, and fostering a positive, inclusive environment. This session aims to equip you with practical tools to design purposeful games that not only entertain but also contribute to the spiritual development of the children you work with Arguably, your early years ministry is the most foundational and critical ministry in the life of your church. Join us as we unpack the 'why' we provide a ministry space for young children and explore how to create an engaging and exciting space/program that will see preschoolers’ hearts set on fire for Jesus. Telling stories is so much more than Sunday school! It's a relational aspect of life that we simply wouldn't survive without. Stories are the social glue that make our relationships grow. So, let's find out how this important part of our social interaction can make a big difference when working with people in all areas. We will take time to look at when we tell stories, why we tell stories, as well as some ways of telling stories. Through real-life examples, learn together such basic principles as careful listening, considering the question behind the question, and creating situations that will produce searching questions rather than red herrings. What are the common pitfalls to avoid? You don’t need to look far to see that before, during, and after this pandemic, young people are navigating unprecedented levels of anxiety, depression, suicide. This seminar equips you with proven and practical answers to the pressing questions of why we’re seeing this surge in young people, and how your team and church can offer the hope and help young people and families need. Conflict seems to be a part of everyday life - in the family, in the workplace and within our faith communities. How do we understand the nature of conflict theologically? Is there a legitimate place for conflict? What triggers conflict? How can we best deal with conflict in a productive manner? Greg and Kim Dickman will join Ross Savill on a panel chaired by Murray Wright to discuss these issues and share their experiences and wisdom.

Learning to apply cross cultural mission here at home - Tim Fawssett [R]
If we go into a remote village in PNG, it would be critical that we applied cross-cultural skills to be able to understand these people and be understood by them. Likewise, if we work with people here in Australia who come from say African or Chinese backgrounds, then again, cross-cultural skills would be really helpful to understand and be understood. But what about engagement with our everyday, Aussie neighbour? How well do we understand "the other" - anyone who is different to us? And how well do you think they understand us when we speak? In this elective we will explore the concept of cross-cultural engagement in everyday ministry settings, picking up some simple skills we hope will improve the ways we meet the needs of children, young people and families, and see a greater impact with the gospel that we share with those who don't know Jesus.

This session aims firstly to help understand what is happening in anxious moments for individuals and its effect on relationships. We were designed and created for relationship and anxiety can often dent and damage the ways we connect with others and with God. The pandemic and other world issues have generally intensified feelings of anxiety, confusion and uncertainty. With that in mind, we will also explore lifestyle strategies to inspire thinking around positive connections for improved mental health and support for ourselves and our families as we continue to turn away from fear, uncertainty and constant change and turn towards the Father for His guidance in all circumstances, even when the world continues to show instability.

The Bible is God’s Big Story! A story of love, failure, rescue, redemption, grace and promise. It's a story that goes before us, includes and invite us, and a story that goes beyond us. In the Bible we see lives transformed through encountering God and following Jesus. However, the world of our kids can be so different to the places, the experiences and the contexts of the stories we share. How do we engage our 21st century kids with the Bible in real, relevant and life-changing ways?

Ministry at the margins: and practical paradigms - Jim Schirmer
This elective is for anyone who is called - or even curious - about doing their ministry at the margins of church and society. In every generation there is a need for disciples of Jesus to go, live, learn from and bless those people in our community who would never walk through the doors of our churches. In this elective, Jim will draw on over a decade of ministry in this area to share the theological imagination and practical steps of ministry at the margins.
